The new Meta University Ranking is out. As in the years before the universities’ placings in ARWU, QS and THE are taken, averaged and used to the form Meta Ranking. Here is the complete list.

This year’s top 10 are:

1. Harvard (=)
2. MIT (=)
3. Cambridge (+1)
4. Stanford (-1)
5.  Caltech (=)
6. Oxford (=)
7. Princeton (=)
8. Yale (+1)
9. University of Chicago (-1)
10. Imperial College London (+2)

As previous year changes in the ranks are small, the Meta Ranking’s volatility is little. The strongest result among the top ranked institutions is coming from Imperial College which entered the top 10 for the first time. While it lost two places in the ARWU Shanghai ranking, Imperial gained one position in the Times Higher Education ranking and impressively jumped from #5 to #2 in the QS ranking. This year Harvard is showing some weakness for the very first time, dropping from #2 to #4 in the QS ranking. However, it still made overall #1 thanks to strong results in THE and ARWU.

The country ranking looks almost the same as last year: The US dominates this statistic with more than half of the the top 50 institutions. All nations held the same amount of universities within the top 50. However, because there are 3 institutions sharing place #49 another country is able to enter the top 50. South Korea’s Seoul National University makes the list. Last year we saw France dropping from the list. This year it could not reenter, but fell even deeper. Its #1 university, Pierre and Marie Curie University, dropped from #63 to #70.

1. US: #28 (=)
2. UK:  #8 (=)
3. Canada: #3 (=)
4. Australia: #3 (=)
5. Germany: #3 (=)
6. Switzerland: #2 (=)
7. Japan: #2 (=)
8. Singapore: #1 (=)
9. South Korea: #1 (+1)

Cuntries share’s of the worlds top 50 universities on a pie.
